An Overall Review of Kai Tai Development since its Handing Over after 1998

Raymond Wong Wai-man, MHKIE

Independent Research/Lecturer, City University of Hong Kong

The Kai Tak Airfield shows no obvious sign of development progress for more than 15 years after its handing over since 1998. In the recent years situation gets changed a lot. The most eye-catching development should be the Cruise Terminal project which was put into operation in 2013. Soon after that was the completion of a series of public housing estates located on the north-eastern corner of the previous airfield, that is, the Kai Ching and Tak Long Estate. Besides, some other housing projects include a “Subsidized Sale Flat Scheme” managed by the URA (·ØµM¤@©~), a "Hong Kong property for Hong Kong residents" project (´ä¤H´ä¦a - û£¼w¤@¸¹) , and a few other private residential projects, will soon be completed for occupation in the year to come.

In fact there are also some other works being done in a much lower profile that may not be noticeable by general public. One major project of course is the MTR Central-Shatin Link with the Kai Tak and To Kwa Wan Station located on the eastern and western ends of Kai Tak. Some other projects taken up by various government departments such as the decommissioning and removal of the old facilities inside the previous airfield areas, provision of a series of roadway for future developments; associated utilities for drainage, sewerage, water mains and landscape works; as well as the reconstruction and upgrading of the Kai Tak Nullah, are works that do not easily come into the eyes of most public.

Ir Raymond Wong has been studying the Kai Tak development since 2005. He will give an overall review including a highlight on the future planning of Kai Tak development in this seminar.
